Prof. Wenzhong Shi from Hong Kong Polytechnic University was invited to give an academic report to our teachers and students

           Recently, Professor Wenzhong Shi, Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, Member of the British Academy of Social Sciences, President of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University-Shenzhen Institute of Technological Innovation (Futian), President of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Poon Lok To Charitable Foundation Smart Cities Research Institute, Chair Professor of Geographic Information Science and Remote Sensing, President of the International Society for Urban Information, and Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Urban Informatics, was invited to give a lecture on "Urban Informatics: Future Direction of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation Science" at Room 1508, Engineering Building Block E. The presentation was chaired by Dr. Wang Bin from the Department of Surveying and Mapping, and attended by more than 60 teachers and students from the College of Oceanography and Space Informatics.

Professor Wenzhong Shi explained his understanding of the concept of urban informatics, introduced in detail the five dimensions of urban informatics, which is an emerging interdisciplinary discipline, including urban science, urban computing, urban sensing, urban systems and applications, urban big data and infrastructure, and demonstrated the application of mobile surveying system using SLAM technology in the real-time three-dimensional modelling of smart cities. Taking the "new coronavirus risk prediction system" as an example, he introduced the team's current research on smart city platform, AI change detection technology, and real-life 3D Hong Kong, China data quality checking technology, etc. He also gave an outlook on the future of the smart city from the cutting-edge directions of digital twins, GeoAI, high-precision maps, urban resilience and urban health, as well.

In addition, Prof. Shi presented an e-book of his own landmark work on urban informatics, Urban Informatics, to the participating students and teachers. During the exchange session, Prof. Wenzhong Shi gave patient answers and professional guidance to the questions of the students and teachers, and he emphasized the importance of cultivating the scientific research ability of students to raise questions, think about problems, and solve problems, which brought brand new thoughts and inspirations to the teachers and students in the audience.
