Professor Monica Wachowicz and A/Professor Qian Sun from RMIT University were invited to our college for academic exchange

 In order to broaden students' international academic horizon, understand academic frontier knowledge and enhance students' academic enthusiasm, Professor Monica Wachowicz and Associate Professor Qian Sun from the department of Space Science of RMIT were invited by Prof. Kaifei He, came to our college for academic exchange and cooperation.

 On the morning of September 18, the representatives of both parties carried out international cooperation exchanges and negotiations in Engineering Building E1508 of UPC. The attendees are Luping Sun from the Department of International Cooperation and Exchange of UPC, Prof. Kaifei He, Associate Dean of the college of Oceanography and Space Informatics, Cai Luo, teacher of the college of International Affairs, Binghu Huang and Shilun Zhou from the department of Surveying and Mapping. The two sides discussed in detail the ways and means of student joint training and reached the intention of cooperation.

 In the subsequent academic presentation phase, Professor Monica Wachowicz from RMIT taught a lecture titled “Geospatial Science at RMIT University and The Role of IoT and AI in Sustainable Futures” in the Room 110 South of Tangdao Bay Campus. Monica Wachowicz first introduced the college of Geospatial Information, focusing on the college's cooperative units, cutting-edge research, main research areas, relevant courses and structures, extracurricular activities and the college's master and doctoral training programs and plans, and finally welcomed ambitious students to RMIT University for further study.

 It was followed by a presentation by Associate Professor Qian Sun of RMIT entitled “GeoAI and Spatial Digital Twins: Pioneering Geospatial Technologies Shaping the Future of Smart Cities”. Qian Sun mainly talked about the construction of digital twin theoretical framework through spatial base graph database and 3D City DB spatial database, and the use of real-time API data sources and Turf.js library to mirror the physical reality in digital space to achieve an immersive communication system. Finally, the model framework was applied to the 2022 Melbourne flood modeling and real-time calculation of derived flood statistics. After the report, she had in-depth exchanges and discussions with the teachers and students present.

 Through this visit and exchange, the both sides have a clearer implementation plan on the ways and means of student joint training, which has played a positive role in the future cooperation. Through the exchange of academic reports, teachers and students of our school have also broadened their academic horizons, learned about the latest research frontiers in GIS, and enhanced students' interest in studying abroad.

 Monica Wachowicz, Director of the Department of Space Science at RMIT University, Chair of the Cisco Big Data Innovation Center, is a world-renowned geospatial data expert, and has been engaged in the teaching and research of geographic information engineering, geography and computer science for a long time.

 Qian Sun, Associate Professor, Department of Space Science at RMIT University, has long been engaged in geospatial information, big data application and analysis, spatial digital twins and other research, and her research results have been widely used in government and urban planning and other fields. She was awarded the Australian Geospatial Council Education Development Award in 2024 and the RMIT Research Excellence Award in 2023.
